Promoting Savings

The members of the Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union have taken an important step towards becoming part of the economic mainstream. Before joining the credit union, 65% of members did not previously have bank accounts. Instead they relied on check cashing stores for their "banking" services. Many have brought in money previously stored under mattresses or in shoe boxes. Nearly 73% of Neighborhood Trust's members are foreign born. They come from a total of 45 countries, with the overwhelming majority from the Dominican Republic. Over 100 local businesses, non-profits, and tenant groups rely on the credit union's low-cost checking accounts.
